Air conditioning repairs, on any make
Not every call is about something we fitted. If your air conditioning has started playing up, whoever put it in, we can usually get out and take a proper look.
We'll always tell you straight. Sometimes an older machine has done its job and a repair is money spent on borrowed time, and we'd rather say that on the phone than let you find out later.
The signs it's worth a call
- It has stopped cooling
- The most common call we get. Could be as simple as a low refrigerant level, or something further into the system, but it’s always worth a proper look before you write the machine off.
- It is leaking water inside
- Usually a blocked drain rather than anything serious, but left alone it can mark a ceiling or a wall, so it is worth catching early rather than living with a bucket.
- It has started making a new noise
- A rattle, a hum that wasn’t there before, or a noise on start-up. Machines don’t usually go from silent to noisy for no reason.
- It is tripping the electrics
- Do not keep resetting it and hoping. That is exactly the kind of fault that gets worse if it is left alone.
- It smells odd when it runs
- A musty smell is usually the filter or the drain. A burning smell means switch it off at the wall and call us.
Is it worth repairing, or is it time to replace it?
Honest answer: it depends on three things, and we can usually tell you which way it is going on the phone before anybody drives anywhere.
How old it is. A wall unit that has done ten or twelve years has had a decent life. One that is five years old has barely started, and a fault on it is nearly always worth fixing.
What has actually failed. A blocked drain, a failed fan or a control board is a repair. A compressor — the expensive lump in the outdoor box — on an older system is usually the point where a new machine makes more sense than a big bill on a machine that owes you nothing.
What gas it runs on. Older systems use refrigerants that are being phased out. If one of those has leaked, the conversation changes, because replacing what has escaped is not always an option any more.
What does an air conditioning repair cost?
We do not publish a figure, here or anywhere else on this site, and the reason is the same as it is for installation: the honest number depends on what is wrong. A filter and a drain clear is not the same job as a leak that has to be found before it can be fixed.
What we will do is tell you on the phone, before we come out, what the likely range is once you have described the symptom. If we think it is not worth repairing, you will hear that on the same call rather than after a callout.

Most repair calls land in the same fortnight everyone else's does: the first proper hot spell of the year. That's when a machine that has been quietly struggling finally gives up, right when you need it most.

Any make, whoever fitted it
Most repair calls we take are on machines somebody else installed. Mitsubishi Electric, LG and Daikin are the three we fit and know best, but a split system is a split system and we will look at whatever is on your wall.
If the firm that fitted yours has stopped answering the phone, that is one of the more common reasons people ring us, and nobody here finds it awkward.
